Having fun with the Leica Lux app1 during a 36-hour bag-reviewing travel adventure.
Getting the elephant in the room out of the way - it’s really hard to recommend anyone go out and buy this app at its current price point and capabilities. Not only is it extremely limited in what it can do, the so-called lens simulations are a joke2 and the price is… let’s just say misaligned with market expectations.
That said, the UI is of course drop-dead gorgeous and surprisingly, the Leica Looks (from which the app gets its namesake) matches well with the same Leica Looks presets supported by the newer Leica Q3s/SL3s, which actually makes mixing photos shot on iPhone and the Q3 easier and yields a more cohesive end product.
More on that in a future post.

Cancelling after the trial period of course, because Leica has lost their damn minds with the pricing. Mountain does not make wise financial decision but even I recognise this price is wacko. ↩

And just furthers Leica’s trend of selling out their brand name in the pursuit of short-term and short-sighted profit but at the cost of inexorably cheapening their brand. It’s kind of an affront to sully the (previously venerable) summilux monikers by reducing them to nothing more than cheap vignette filters applied to the stock iPhone camera… and to do so in an objectively worse say (i.e. the output is constrained to 12MP due to limitations of the OS) and then charge $60 USD a year for that? Damn. ↩
